Octavio Moreno: Celebrated Mexican-American Baritone

Octavio Moreno, a distinguished Mexican-American baritone, has made remarkable strides in the world of classical music. He earned his Doctorate degree in Music from the University of Arizona, showcasing his dedication to the art form. Mr. Moreno’s journey began with his participation in the Young Artist Program at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, which set the stage for further success at the Houston Grand Opera Studio. His competitive achievements are noteworthy.

Mr. Moreno claimed first place in the Linus Lerner International Opera Competition in 2018 and earned third place in the 2008 Eleanor McCollum Competition for Young Singers.

He represented Mexico with pride in prestigious international competitions, including the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 2009 and the Paris International Competition in 2010, along with a commendable third place in the Carlo Morelli Competition held in Mexico City. His earlier accolades include top honors at the Mariana de Gonitch Competition in Cuba (2001) and the Premio Ciudad Trujillo in Peru (2004).

Throughout his career, Mr. Moreno has graced the stages of renowned opera companies such as Chicago Lyric Opera, New York City Opera, Houston Grand Opera, San Diego Opera, and Arizona Opera, in addition to Bellas Artes Opera in Mexico City, the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Teatro Nacional Sucre, in Ecuador, and the National Center for the Performing Arts in Bejing, China; among others. His versatility as a performer is showcased in his role premieres, including Moncada in Zorro, Xihuitl in the second Mariachi Opera El Pasado Nunca Se Termina, and Laurentino in the pioneering mariachi opera Cruzar la Cara de la Luna.

Mr. Moreno’s repertoire spans a wide array of characters and genres, portraying Marcello in La Bohème, Tonio in Pagliacci, and Zurga in Les Pêcheurs de Perles. He has captivated audiences as Don Alfonso in Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte, Vronsky in Anna Karenina, and John Proctor in The Crucible. Other notable roles include Germont in La Traviata, Malatesta in Don Pasquale, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, the title character in Verdi’s Rigoletto, Sourin in Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades, and Belcore in Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love.

In addition to his operatic achievements, Mr. Moreno made his symphonic debut with the San Antonio Symphony, performing the Baritone Solo in the ballet Estancia. His extensive experience and dedication to music continue to inspire many aspiring artists in the field.

Dr. Moreno has made significant contributions to the world of mariachi music, performing on esteemed stages and theaters across the globe. With an impressive career spanning over 20 years, he has collaborated with some of the most illustrious mariachi ensembles, including Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, Mariachi Camperos de Nati Cano, and Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán.
